What does A2 Licence mean?
The A2 motorcycle licence is a European licence category available to riders aged 19 and over (or 18 with prior A1 experience). It restricts riders to motorcycles producing a maximum of 35 kW (47 HP), with a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.2 kW/kg.
Importantly, a full-power bike can be legally restricted to A2 limits by an approved dealer, then de-restricted once the rider obtains their full A licence (after holding A2 for 2 years and passing tests). Many popular bikes including the Kawasaki Z650, Honda CB650R, Yamaha MT-07 and Suzuki SV650 are commonly available in A2-compliant form.
How riders should use this term
Motorcycle terms are most useful when they help you understand real riding behavior. When you see A2 Licence on a spec page, treat it as one part of the full motorcycle package, not as a number or feature to judge alone.
- Compare the term against the motorcycle category and intended use.
- Check related specs such as weight, engine size, seat height, braking system and suspension.
- Use the comparison tool if two bikes look similar on paper.
