What does Torque mean?
Torque is the rotational force produced by an engine, measured in Newton-metres (Nm) or foot-pounds (ft-lb). In motorcycling, torque determines how strongly a bike pulls from low revs — what riders feel as "grunt" or "bottom-end power".
Peak torque is always produced at a specific RPM. A cruiser may deliver its peak torque at 3,000 RPM, making it very tractable in traffic. A high-revving sportbike might not reach peak torque until 10,000 RPM, demanding more gear changes and higher speeds to access its full performance.
Torque and horsepower are related: horsepower is calculated from torque multiplied by RPM. A bike with high torque at low revs will feel faster in real-world riding conditions even if its peak horsepower is modest.
How riders should use this term
Motorcycle terms are most useful when they help you understand real riding behavior. When you see Torque on a spec page, treat it as one part of the full motorcycle package, not as a number or feature to judge alone.
- Compare the term against the motorcycle category and intended use.
- Check related specs such as weight, engine size, seat height, braking system and suspension.
- Use the comparison tool if two bikes look similar on paper.

Why is Torque important when comparing motorcycles?
It helps riders understand how a motorcycle may feel, perform or behave in real use. The exact importance depends on the bike category and the rider's purpose.
